It's nice to be flexible when you can be so with that in mind we've gone for this approach on the ECW Artillery. You can use the guns freestanding with the crew and paraphernalia or, as you can see from the pictures, they can be arranged on the gun bases. As you take casualties you can replace crew figures with equipment. The figures are Bicorne and Warlord. The bigger gun is Bicorne and the smaller gun is Warlord (Resin).

Toby - these are superb. I tried that basing idea for artillery crew with some Napoleonic French but I think you've got a much better solution for it - and so much better than gluing all the crew to the same base as the gun!
