This unit was part of a recent commission. They are converted from Perry metals. They have extra buttons and lentil plumes added as well as squared off cuffs and filed bayonets. The shako originally had a horn molded on but this has been filed off and the Horse emblem has been painted on. Overall the unit is very nice!

Hi guys

2 Royalist officers haggling with Gwen over the price of strumptetry with Lolita, one of Gwens new girls.

In this photo you can catch a glimpse of Lolita inside the tent and also Pike Sergeant Tew coming around the corner of the tent laiden down with Ye olde white lightning from the local spar.

This is Tyke, Pike Sergeant Tews beloved hound, marking his territory at the supply tent.

This Royalist chap is enjoying a nice soak in the barrel. Serving wench has caught his eye and although you can't see it he his now standing at attention in the barrel.

The guy on the barrel is having his tooth pulled or is being interrogated for information.

Royalist dinner supplies being watched over by local club man.

Royalist bacon supply again watched over by local club man.

These are cripples and beggers standing outside the local tube station (or at least will be in several hundred years)

Hi guys!

A new update for the ECW Project. This is a blue coated cavalry regiment. Made up from Bicorne, renegade and Redoubt on Front Rank horses with green stuff saddles. The bags, holsters and blanket rolls are from TAG.

These are just waiting to be based as I have run out of MDF bases! Oops!

Still a lovely mixed bunch with good variety of leather and metal work. I'm quite pleased with these.

Hello Readers.

It's nice to be flexible when you can be so with that in mind we've gone for this approach on the ECW Artillery. You can use the guns freestanding with the crew and paraphernalia or, as you can see from the pictures, they can be arranged on the gun bases. As you take casualties you can replace crew figures with equipment. The figures are Bicorne and Warlord. The bigger gun is Bicorne and the smaller gun is Warlord (Resin).

ECW Manufacturer Comparison

Today we have been comparing various manufacturers ECW ranges for our ongoing ECW project. In particular we have been experimenting mixing Redoubt riders on Bicorne and Assault group horses. I feel they mix fairly well. We also found out Bicorne riders go nicely on varying horses. It seems Assault group and Bicorne horses are fundamentally the same. Perhaps sculpted by the same person.

Secondly there is a comparison shot of infantry from various makes showing size and build differences between them.

French Napoleonic Limbers

Welcome to part two of the Napoleonic project we're working on. These are all Foundry figures. 2 French limber teams pulling 12 pdr's. These are again painted to our Museum standard. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy painting these Foundry figures. A Good figure makes the whole experience all the more enjoyable.

The Green on the gun is as realistic as possible. The description of the colour of paint used was yellow ochre plus a very small amount of black. So I recreated this using vallejo colours and it turned out to be a fantastic highlight colour which matches rather well with a lot of images I've seen in various books.

Foundry French Artillery

As Promised here is the first part of a new Napoleonic Project.

We are concentrating on the French First so here we have some French Campaign Artillery crew. Guns and limbers to follow shortly.

These are painted to our Museum standard.

The blue is Vallejo Dark Prussian blue for the base coat. Followed by a 50/50 mix of Dark Prussian blue and Royal blue. Then highlighted with an 80/20 mix of Royal blue and sky blue for the highlights.

The Red is Vallejo Black red base coat followed by Vallejo RED.

95th Rifles

Here is a recent unit we painted. All Perry miniatures metal 95th Rifles except for the mounted officer which is a conversion made from a Perry Horse, a Foundry RHA mtd officer body and a plastic Perry Rifle Head. It's an easy conversion and works rather well.

I hope you enjoy looking at this unit as much as I enjoyed painting it. The Decals on the backpacks and water bottles are from Alban Miniatures. You have to cut them out which is fiddly but well worth it.

I just wish Perry Miniatures figures had less flash!

The Colour of the day is...

Anitas Burnt Umber.

Uses:

This is a very useful brown and a good undercoat or flat coat for many areas of your model. It can be used on wood, hair, leather and cloth. I use it alot for muskets and Napoleonic campaign trousers for British soldiers fighting in the Peninsula.

Quality:

Most Anitas colours are fairly average in terms of paint quality but are incredibly cheap at around £0.79p per 59ml bottle. Good consistency, Bad for dry brushing. Easily blended and easy to use.

Use with: Anitas Earth brown and Chocolate brown as highlights. Alternatively use any brown of the same hue that's lighter. Add cream to lighten.

The Colour of the day

This is a new feature to the blog which I will pick a colour of paint from a manufacturer and give my opinion on the quality of the paint and it's uses.

So Todays colour of the day is Vallejo Vermillion

Uses:

This is a very vibrant red and a good highlight for many dark reds. I use it lots on Napoleonics such as the British Red coat. This usually acts as a first highlight for scarlet reds or a second highlight for a more subtle darker red.

Quality:

As with most Vallejo colours this exceptional paint quality. Good consistancy and flow. Easily blended too when watered down slightly.

Use with:

Highlight over Vermillion with Vallejo Orange red for brighter reds or Highlight a darker red such as Americana Napa red.

No skool like the old skool!

Well, Tonight's Vision was a success. We got through it without any technical difficulties or freezing. The way we got around that was by reducing the quality of the video slightly which in turn made it a bit more pixelly. So we compromised the quality slightly.

However I do feel slightly disappointed after re-watching it that you can't see as much detail as I had hoped. When I see the video on my screen as I'm recording it the video is much sharper.

We shall continue experimenting with quality and hopefully come to a happy compromise.

I'd like to hear your thoughts too on how you think the Vision went.

Artmaster Vision after thoughts

Well, tonight's Artmaster Vision live painting session was a success and a failure at the same time. It started well but a few minutes in the camera froze up which broke the video recording into segments. Also towards the end we had some glare issues from the paper below the figure but overall the session went rather well!

I think the Perry miniatures Samurai figure came out really nicely with some good colour choice, freehand patterns and a nice flower on the base as a finishing touch. I will certainly be painting some more Samurai soon. Photos to follow!

My name is Toby Thornton and I am one of the Artists at Artmaster Studio. I'm 20 years young at the time of writing this and have been painting miniatures for 14 years.
